PAST: Dying Art of Handpainted Bollywood Posters

October 21, 2020

Travel to a Bollywood of yore for a behind-the-scenes look at the dying art of Bollywood posters.

India is a celebration for the senses. Upon arriving in Mumbai, visitors' eyes alight upon a vibrant cultural melange of cinema billboards, posters, and advertisements. Over the last hundred years, hand-painted billboards and posters for Indian cinema evolved into a distinctive art form. Come meet the creative geniuses of which only a handful remain, and who, despite their limited resources gave a “larger than life” image to actors whom they had never actually met.

Free, limited space.

Speaker Ali Adil Khan is founder of and curator at Toronto-based South Asian Gallery of Arts. An acclaimed art critic and sought-after speaker on South Asian Arts, Adil has extensively researched the art of BW posters which form a cherished part of his personal art collection.

PAST: Subterrranean Ghosts of the Vanishing Stepwells of India

October 07, 2020

Join us for a talk that showcases India's least-known edifices.
India’s palaces, forts, temples, and tombs are on every travel itinerary. But the country’s magnificent subterranean stepwells remain largely unknown. These unique water-harvesting structures—marvels of architecture, engineering, and art—proliferated throughout the subcontinent for over a millennium but eventually faded into oblivion by the 19th century.Victoria Lautman, author of "Vanishing Stepwells of India" (2017)  has been documenting stepwells since her first visit to India in 1985. It led to many subsequent trips and ultimately an obsession with the country’s vanishing stepwells.

Free, limited space.
